Why stair runners look right in older Liverpool homes

Edwardian and Victorian terraces — the kind that fill Wavertree, Toxteth, Edge Hill, Allerton — were originally designed with a runner up the staircase and polished wood at the edges. A stair runner respects that original detailing. It also makes the staircase feel more elegant than a wall-to-wall carpet, especially with a wide skirting reveal of polished wood or painted timber on either side.

Pattern or plain — and width considerations

A patterned runner (traditional stripes, geometric, oriental-style) is forgiving on stairs because the pattern hides the inevitable wear. A plain runner is cleaner and more contemporary but shows tread marks sooner. Width is usually 60-70cm for a standard UK staircase, leaving 6-12cm of bare wood on each side. Wider runners (80-90cm) cover most of the tread and look more carpet-like.

Bindings and edges

Once we cut the runner to width, the long edges need binding to stop them fraying. Cotton tape binding is the traditional option — durable, low-cost, available in matching or contrasting colours. Whip-stitched edge gives a more handcrafted look. Leather binding is the premium option for luxury installs. We'll show you samples at the home measure.

Stair rods — function or just decoration?

Original Edwardian houses had brass stair rods that physically held the runner in place at the back of each tread. Modern stair runners are fitted with carpet gripper underneath, so rods are decorative rather than functional — but they look fantastic on the right staircase. We sell brass, chrome and antique-bronze rods, and can fit them as part of the job or supply for you to fit later.

Lining up the pattern at the corners

If your staircase has a winder (pie-slice steps that turn a corner), the pattern continuity gets tricky. Our fitters spend time matching the pattern across the winder so it flows naturally. This is why we always measure in person — the layout decisions can't be made from a length and width alone.
